WASHINGTON, DC: A rumor has been going viral on social media platforms claiming that Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has called for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down from his position, citing that he is unfit for the role, sparking speculations among online users. Let us analyse the origins of the claim and fact-check it.

According to the claim that is going viral, Fetterman has said that his colleague, Senate Minority Leader Schumer, isn't fit for the title he holds.

"He's a traitor to his oath and his country," Fetterman allegedly said, "He refuses to put his nation above his campaign donors."

The post further says that Fetterman believes Schumer should step down as Leader and allow someone who respects the rule of law to take over.

"He's not what this country needs in a leadership position,” Fetterman said, according to the post.

The claim originated on Facebook, has spread on X, and is being amplified by various accounts, with the comments indicating that many believe the rumor to be authentic.

Fact Check: The claim originated as a satire

The claim, however, is false as there is no evidence that supports the viral rumor. A search on Google for the remarks yielded no relevant results from credible news media outlets.

If Fetterman had actually made such a remark against the minority leader and called for him to step down, it would have been widely covered.

Moreover, the post, which came alongside the images of the two Democratic politicians, has an overlay text on the bottom right corner stating, ‘Nothing on this page is real.’

Hence, the post originated as a parody, made for the sake of engagement.

Despite being a Democrat, Fetterman has often stirred controversy for making comments against his own party and colleagues, in favour of conservatives and President Donald Trump.

According to a recent report that underscores Republican efforts to retain control of the Senate, Trump has even privately offered his “total and complete endorsement” to Fetterman if he were to join the Republican Party.

According to Politico, the outreach is said to include the promise of political backing and significant financial support, with some GOP figures viewing Fetterman as a potential lifeline even if Republicans lose seats in upcoming elections.

However, Fetterman has declined the offer, stating, “I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.”
