EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY: The 2026 FIFA World Cup final continues to fuel viral claims on social media days after Spain defeated Argentina. A viral video showed that Lionel Messi deliberately refused to make eye contact with President Donald Trump while receiving his runners-up medal during the post-match ceremony. The clip has prompted online debate, with many users interpreting Messi's body language as a political snub. Let's fact-check the claim.

The viral X post shared a video from the 2026 FIFA World Cup runners-up medal ceremony, claiming that Lionel Messi refused to make eye contact with President Donald Trump while receiving his medal.

The footage shows Messi, wearing Argentina's No. 10 jersey, approaching the podium as Trump prepares to present him with a runners-up medal.

In the clip, Messi first shakes hands with a FIFA official before greeting Trump, who then places the medal around Messi's neck and appears to say a few words.

Throughout the interaction, Messi keeps his head lowered and makes little direct eye contact. Some social media users interpreted his body language as a deliberate snub, while others noted that Messi has long displayed a quiet, reserved demeanor during public appearances and ceremonial events.

Fact Check: Misleading, no evidence supports the claim

The viral clip shows Lionel Messi looking downward while President Donald Trump places a runner-up medal around his neck during the 2026 FIFA World Cup medal ceremony.

However, the footage does not prove that Messi deliberately refused to make eye contact with Trump or intentionally snubbed him.

The video captures only a brief interaction during the medal presentation. Messi approaches the podium, shakes hands with a FIFA official and then with Trump, who places the medal around his neck while appearing to exchange a few words.

Although Messi keeps his head lowered for much of the interaction, the clip does not provide evidence of his intent or support claims that he was deliberately avoiding eye contact.

Also, Messi has long been known for his reserved and introverted public demeanor, often displaying limited facial expressions and minimal eye contact during interviews, award ceremonies, and other high-profile appearances.

His body language in the medal ceremony is therefore consistent with his typical public behavior and cannot, on its own, be interpreted as a political statement or personal snub.

There is also no credible report from FIFA, the Argentine team, or reputable news organizations stating that Messi intentionally ignored Trump during the ceremony. The viral claim relies on speculation about body language rather than verifiable evidence.
