The claim has triggered criticism and speculation over its authenticity, prompting a verification of the viral rumor.

The claim surfaced on X, which stated, “Speaker Mike Johnson just sent the Democrat caucus an $18 million bill for ‘unnecessary use of expense accounts’ after his audit showed they spend three times more than Republicans.”

The post further states that the Democrats are required to pay it back within 10 days or lose access to all future expense approvals. 

The post drew conflicting reactions from online users, with conservative accounts lauding the speaker, while others criticised the alleged move, suggesting that many believe the claim is true. Meanwhile, a few others appeared to question the claim’s authenticity and called for a fact-check.

Fact Check: No credible evidence to support the claim

The claim, however, is false, as there is no evidence of the House Speaker sending an $18 million bill alleging that the Democrats unnecessarily used expense accounts, which is three times more than the Republicans.

There are no official remarks, statements, or announcements from the Speaker or the House that support the claim.

A search on Google for relevant keywords yielded no credible reports by prominent news media outlets, which, if true will not go unreported, given the sensationalism of the rumor.

Moreover, the claim originated from an account called ‘John McAfee News’ which, though not explicitly a parody account, has posted several such fake and exaggerated claims for the sake of engagement.

Mike Johnson claims Democrats are being overtaken by 'communists'

Following a recent election victory involving Abdul El-Sayed, Johnson has made a dramatic claim about the Democratic Party, arguing that it is being “overtaken by communists,” intensifying the debate over the party's direction and ideology.

In a press release recently, Johnson said, “The question that voters across the nation have to answer this fall is whether we're going to turn the greatest nation in the history of the world over to communism and big government socialism, as radical left Democrats insist."
