WASHINGTON, DC: Amid speculation surrounding the health of Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, a claim began circulating on social media platforms that the 84-year-old had posted "I’m not dead" on his X (formerly Twitter) account before quickly deleting it. Let us fact-check the claim.

Claim: Mitch McConnell posted ‘I’m not dead’ before deleting it

The viral post about Mitch McConnell's apparent tweet, which has garnered tens of thousands of views, has drawn mockery from online users (@HalfwayPost/X)

The claim surfaced as a post from the X account The Halfway Post and stated that "Mitch McConnell’s Twitter account reportedly just mysteriously posted and quickly deleted, 'I’m not dead, YOU’RE DEAD!'"

The claim was amplified by several other accounts on the platform and has also spread on Substack.

The post, which has garnered tens of thousands of views, has drawn mockery from online users, with many comments interpreting the claim to be authentic, while a few others questioned the claim and called for a fact check.

Fact Check: The claim originated as satire

The claim, however, is false, as there are no credible reports of the senator making such a post before deleting it.

There are no screenshots of McConnell’s post, which would be available if he had really posted it. A search on online archives where even the deleted posts are available showed no results that support the claim.

A search on Google also did not yield any credible results from prominent news media outlets, which, if true, would have been widely covered.

Additionally, the X account called "The Halfway Post," which posted the claim, describes itself in the bio as "satire."

A fact check by Grok stated, “The claim in this tweet is satirical fiction. There is no evidence that Mitch McConnell's official X/Twitter account posted and deleted ‘I’m not dead, YOU’RE DEAD!’”

The claim surfaced as the Kentucky Republican's office faced renewed scrutiny after top aides declined to answer fresh questions about the senator's health as his absence from public view reached 40 days.

According to a report by the Daily Beast on Friday, July 24, the 84-year-old has not been seen publicly since he was hospitalized on June 14.

On July 12, his office released a hospital photograph showing McConnell alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, accompanied by a statement saying he would not return to the Senate "quite yet" because of a fall and "a mild case of pneumonia."
