Fact Check: Did Sandra Bullock announce she has been diagnosed with cancer?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A rumor has been circulating on social media platforms for the past few days claiming that Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock has announced she has been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, sparking concerns from fans and online users. The claim has also triggered speculation, with many calling for a fact-check.
Claim: Sandra Bullock has been diagnosed with rare blood cancer
According to a rumor that has been circulating since late July, actor Sandra Bullock announced that she has multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, and that it had returned after "18 years in remission."
The claim spread across multiple social media platforms, including X, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, accompanying short videos supposedly of Bullock talking about loving her fans or feeling unloved.
The claim drew mixed reactions from online users, with many expressing shock and concern for the 62-year-old actor, while others remained cautious, questioning its authenticity.
Fact Check: False, Sandra Bullock made no such announcement
However, the claim is false, as no such reports or authentic video about the actress exists that says she was diagnosed with cancer.
A search on the actress’ Instagram account did not reveal any such announcement, and her most recent post as of this writing is from July 10, which shows behind-the-scenes footage from filming ‘Practical Magic 2,’ a romantic fantasy film she's starring in that releases in September.
A Google search for the claim returned no reports by credible news and entertainment media outlets, which, if true, would have made headlines, given Bullock's fame. Hence, the claim is rated as false.
Also, the videos of the Academy Award-winning actress had indicators of generative artificial intelligence, including a fake monotone voice, distortions near the eyes when she blinked, and inconsistently appearing hair strands.
Some of the posts that amplified the claim have been deleted, making it difficult to track down their origin.
