The rumor spread in the form of a screenshot that purportedly showed a post by the president on his official Truth Social account.
The purported post states, “Canadian Bacon will now be called American Ham. Or just Ham - because that's what it is. Calling it bacon was a lie. Thank you for your attention to this matter! -DJT.”
The screenshot has been shared by several accounts on X and Facebook, garnering hundreds of thousands of views. While many appeared to believe it was a real post by Trump, others remained skeptical and questioned its authenticity, prompting a fact check.
Fact Check: False, Trump made no such post
The screenshot, however, is fake, as Trump has made no such post on any of his social media accounts as of this writing.
A search of the president's official Truth Social account and commentary X accounts that archive all his posts yielded no results matching the text in the screenshot. Similar searches on Facebook and X also returned no results.
If Trump had actually posted it, prominent news media outlets would likely have covered it widely. However, a Google search for reports about the alleged post, including whether it had been deleted, returned no media reports.
Moreover, the earliest version of the post originated from an X account called ‘Canada Post,’ which describes itself in its bio as ‘satire.’ Hence, the fabricated screenshot was intended as parody and made for the sake of engagement.
Trump's renaming spree amid US-Canada tensions
The screenshot surfaced amid the Trump administration’s recent geographical renaming spree as tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate over tariffs.
The name changes include the signing of an executive order directing the federal government to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” and renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
“As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it's very routinely the Gulf of America,” Trump said.
The president also suggested that he would eventually rename the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
