Fact Check: Did Trump declare an immediate end to trade talks with Canada?
WASHINGTON, DC: After imposing 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, declaring that Ottawa has unfairly discriminated against American autos, alcohol, and dairy products, a rumor is circulating online, claiming that President Donald Trump has declared an end to trade talks with Canada. The claim has sparked concerns and speculation, needing a fact-check.
Claim: Donald Trump is terminating trade talks with Canada

The claim surfaced as a video of a Fox News broadcast in which anchor John Roberts reads aloud a Truth Social post from the president stating that the United States was "hereby terminating all discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately."
Different versions of the claim spread across X and Facebook, with one X post stating, “President Trump declares the U.S. will IMMEDIATELY END all trade talks with Canada after they moved to slap a Digital Services Tax on American tech companies."
Fact Check: The clip attached to the post is old
However, the claim is false; Trump did not declare an end to all negotiations with Canada as part of the announcement.
Despite the tense Canada-US relationship and 50% tariffs, officials have spoken repeatedly about ongoing trade talks between the two countries.
Also, the Fox News clip attached to the claims is outdated and references a since-resolved 2025 disagreement over a digital services tax. A search on Google for the claim revealed that Roberts was referencing a Trump post on Truth Social from June 27, 2025.
The post states, “We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country."
"They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately."
"We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Donald Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canada
On Monday, July 20, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on most Canadian goods, declaring that the country has unfairly discriminated against American products.
The move could unleash a new wave of economic disruption, raising the risk of inflation and further straining relations between two nations that had been closely integrated economically before Trump's return to the White House.
