WASHINGTON, DC: After changing his tone on mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming that President Donald Trump said postal voting is fraudulent only when it contains votes for someone else. The claim has sparked criticism and concerns, requiring a fact-check.

According to a viral Facebook post, Trump has encouraged Republicans to vote by mail, reassuring supporters that the voting method he spent years portraying as a threat to democracy becomes perfectly secure when used to vote Republican.

The post came with a photo of Trump along with an overlay text stating, “Trump reassures Republican voters that postal voting is only fraudulent when the envelope contains a vote for someone else.”

The claim drew conflicting reactions, with many criticising the president for the remark, while others expressed skepticism and called for a fact-check.

Fact Check: Donald Trump made no such remark

Although Trump recently changed his tone on mail-in voting, after months of rhetorical and legal attacks on the method, no evidence shows he explicitly claimed it was fraudulent only when the envelope contained a vote for someone else.

A review of his recent campaign rally speeches contains no mention of the alleged mail-in ballot remark.

There are also no other recent statements, announcements, or social media posts from the president that support the claim.

If Trump had really made such a remark, prominent news media outlets would have widely covered it, making headlines and triggering nationwide debates and backlash. However, no such news reports exist as of this writing.

Additionally, the claim was posted by a Facebook page called ‘NewsThump,’ which describes itself in its bio as ‘parody’ and ‘satire.’

The claim surfaced after Trump recently released a video urging Republicans to use “every appropriate tool” to vote in the midterms, including early and mail voting methods he has previously opposed.

"Republicans must WIN the 2026 Midterm Elections, and we must use every appropriate tool," Trump wrote. "Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail, or in-person, we must swamp the Radical Left Dumocrats with massive turnout!"

"The 2026 midterm elections are upon us, and I'm asking every patriot to get out and vote," the president further said in the video. "Vote early, vote by mail, or vote in person on Election Day."
