Fact Check: Did Trump threaten to leave the Republican Party as GOP senators turned against him?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid criticism and pressure against President Donald Trump and his administration, including from members of his own party, a rumor began circulating on social media claiming that Trump had threatened to leave the Republican Party because GOP senators were turning against him, sparking widespread speculation.
Let us fact-check the claim.
Claim: Trump threatens to leave Republican Party
According to a viral post that surfaced on X, Trump is reportedly threatening to leave the Republican Party and "burn it down" because GOP senators are turning against him.
“The House is useless,” he allegedly said. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal of his verdict, and none of his voters showed up to the 250th fair.
The post has garnered more than a hundred thousand views as of this writing and has been amplified by several other accounts, triggering mixed reactions from online users.
Fact Check: The claim originated as satire
The claim, however, is false, as there are no reports of the president threatening to leave the Republican Party.
A Google search for the claim yielded no credible results supporting it, apart from social media posts spreading the rumor. If the claim were true, it would have been widely covered by major news outlets, making headlines and sparking widespread public debate.
Moreover, the claim was first posted by an X parody account called ‘The Halfway Post,’ which describes itself in its bio as ‘satire.’ Therefore, the claim was intended as a parody for engagement purposes.
A fact check by Grok stated, “The claim is fake. The HalfwayPost account is explicitly satirical and does not report straight news; its claim of Trump threatening to leave and 'burn down' the GOP is an exaggeration without direct current confirmation.”
Trump slams GOP senators over Iran vote
The claim surfaced after Trump sharply criticized four Republican senators on June 23 for joining Democrats in supporting a war powers resolution related to US military involvement in Iran, arguing that the vote complicated ongoing diplomatic efforts with Tehran.
“So, I have Iran on the ‘ropes,’ ready to go down for the fall, willing to give us practically anything, and for the first time in decades, respecting the hell out of the United States and its President, ME, and the US Senate decides to have a poorly timed and meaningless War Powers Act Vote,” Trump wrote.
“Four Republican Losers voted with the Democrats, and Iran asked my people, ‘what does that all mean?’ These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!” Trump added.
