WASHINGTON, DC: Amid pressure on the Trump administration over inflation, a claim is circulating on social media platforms alleging that President Donald Trump has vowed to send $1 million to every American to beat inflation. The claim has sparked mockery and questions among online users, with many calling for verification.
Claim: Donald Trump promised $1M to every American
According to the viral claim, "It's going to work perfectly," Trump explained.
"We're going to raise the national debt by just a bit, but we're going to send everyone a check for a million dollars. Then we're going to print a bunch of money to offset the debt. It's the perfect plan, believe me. Nobody has ever done anything like it."
The move was allegedly met with opposition from economists, whom Trump described as "losers."
"Those guys don't know anything," the president purportedly said. "I know how the economy works, because I'm very wealthy myself. We'll give everyone a million dollars. Even the losers and haters. Inflation will be destroyed forever, everyone will love it, and we'll win big in November."
Many appeared to believe the claim to be true and slammed Trump, while others questioned the claim’s authenticity.
Fact Check: False; the claim originated from a parody account
The claim, however, is false, as there are no reports of Trump making such a vow to beat inflation.
There are no records of where he made the above mentioned statements, and there are also no official announcements, press releases, or interviews from the president that support the viral claim.
If Trump had really made the claim, it would not go unreported by prominent news media outlets, but a search on Google for the claim yielded no such news reports.
Moreover, the claim was posted by a parody account called ‘The Babylon Bee,’ and hence the claim and quote attributed to Trump are false.
Donald Trump promised $5000 to every adult American
The claim was based on Trump’s proposal of $5000 to every American if Republicans won the upcoming midterm election, which he described as a return tied to what he called the country’s economic success.
"Here is my promise: If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our tremendous economic success, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said.
