Fact Check: Did WH misspell United States in Trump's 'Super Intelligence' accord?
WASHINGTON, DC: After President Donald Trump signed the accord on ‘super intelligence,’ which aims to address fears about Artificial Intelligence, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming to show the ‘United States’ misspelled as ‘Unites States’ in the signed document. The claim has sparked speculation, calling for a fact-check.
Claim: United States misspelled as 'Unites States' in Donald Trump's accord
According to the rumor that began circulating online since late September, Trump's White House misspelled United States as 'Unites States' on its "super intelligence" accord.
The claim surfaced after Trump and a group of tech industry leaders signed the voluntary accord at the White House on September 29 as part of an effort to address fears about the future of AI. The accord was also signed as an executive order renaming ‘artificial intelligence’ as ‘super intelligence,’ or ‘SI.’
Users on X, Facebook, and Bluesky shared the signed document, claiming to show the spelling mistake, which many appeared to believe, while a few others dismissed it as fake and called for verification.
Fact Check: The claim is indeed true
The claim is indeed true, as the official White House X post sharing the image of the accord confirmed that the document truly misspelled "United States" under Trump's signature as "President of the Unites States."
The document also appears to contain other errors, such as the word ‘joint’ near the top is misaligned, indicating that someone may have added it later.
Although the document didn't feature any official letterhead or other graphical designation, it included a title attributing ownership to the White House: "White House Accord on Super Intelligence."
The spelling error appeared on the second page, which featured Trump's signature along with the signatures of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, "XAI" CEO Elon Musk, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Donald Trump signs executive order renaming 'AI' to 'SI'
The executive order explained the administration's reasoning for attempting to rename AI as SI, stating, “The terminology used by the Federal Government should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people."
"Accordingly, the term ‘Super Intelligence' more appropriately captures the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies."
"It is therefore the policy of my Administration that, to the maximum extent permitted by law, the executive branch shall use the terms ‘Super Intelligence' and ‘SI' in place of ‘Artificial Intelligence' and ‘AI' and will not acknowledge the usage of ‘Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in any applicable setting.”
