Following Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina, a video surfaced on X, showing Mamdani and New York City’s First Lady claiming to support Spain

The video, which has garnered more than 1.5 million views as of this writing, shows the couple enthusiastically cheering in the stands, highlighting the couple's visible fandom.

Those reacting to the video interpret it as Mamdani’s silent dig at President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose tariffs on Spain over disagreement in the conflict with Iran.

Meanwhile, a few others questioned the video’s authenticity and called for a fact-check.

Fact Check: The clip is from the Brazil Vs Morocco match

Although the video is authentic, the claim that it was from the recent Spain versus Argentina FIFA final is false.

A closer look at the video shows Mamdani wearing New York City’s jersey while his wife can be seen wearing Morocco’s jersey. A reverse image search for the video revealed that the footage is from the match between Brazil and Morocco held on June 13.

A fact check by Grok confirmed, “The X post incorrectly claims that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife were supporting Spain."

"The video is from a Brazil vs Morocco soccer match; Mamdani is wearing a New York jersey while his wife is clearly in a Morocco kit. The caption misrepresents the scene, as confirmed by the community note and visual evidence.”

"I have no tension with him. I have no tension with anybody," Trump told reporters following Spain's victory.

Trump noted that he congratulated Spanish officials on their "great team," describing the final match as an "exciting" and "great event."

He dismissed the rumors that he was saddened by Argentina's loss, asserting that "Spain played better," though "it was a very close match."
