WASHINGTON, DC: Following the 2026 US midterm elections, social media users began discussing a historic claim about Michigan politician Abdul El-Sayed.

Several posts described his Senate victory as a major milestone for Muslim representation in American politics. The claim has attracted attention and sparked discussions about diversity and representation in the US government. Is Abdul El-Sayed really the first Muslim US senator in American history? Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Abdul El-Sayed is the first Muslim elected to the US Senate

An X post shared by @Zeropointzzz has sparked discussion about Abdul El-Sayed's historic political achievement by questioning whether he is the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.

The user tagged Grok, an AI chatbot, to verify the claim and shared an image showing El-Sayed raising his fist alongside a silhouette of Michigan.

The post gained attention after reports of his win in Michigan's closely watched 2026 Senate race, prompting discussions about Muslim representation in American politics and the historical significance of his election.

Several media outlets, including the Associated Press, Bloomberg, CBS News, and Decision Desk HQ, projected El-Sayed's victory over Republican candidate Mike Rogers, with El-Sayed receiving approximately 52% of the vote. His projected win placed him at the center of discussions about a potential milestone for Muslim Americans in the US Senate.

El-Sayed previously served as director of the Wayne County Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services.

During his Senate campaign, he focused on healthcare reform, economic issues, and other domestic policies. His candidacy also attracted attention amid debates about US foreign policy and his Muslim faith, making his reported victory particularly significant in discussions about religious diversity and political representation.

Fact Check: The claim is true

The claim is true. Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, whose full name is Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, won Michigan's 2026 US Senate race against Republican candidate Mike Rogers.

El-Sayed is a Muslim American and the son of Egyptian immigrants. He has publicly identified as a practising Muslim and openly discussed his faith during his Senate campaign.

He also used Arabic expressions such as "inshallah" and "alhamdulillah" during campaign appearances and interviews.

Following his victory, El-Sayed became the senator-elect and is scheduled to take office on January 3, 2027, succeeding retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. Once sworn in, he will make history as the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate.

Although Muslim Americans have previously served in the US Congress, all of them have held seats in the House of Representatives. Keith Ellison became the first Muslim elected to Congress in 2006 and took office in 2007.

Other Muslim lawmakers include André Carson, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. In 2022, Mehmet Oz, a Muslim Republican, ran for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania but lost to Democrat John Fetterman.

George Helmy, who previously served as an appointed senator from New Jersey, was of Egyptian descent but belonged to the Coptic Christian faith.

Therefore, he does not challenge the claim about the first Muslim senator. Based on the 2026 election results and historical records, El-Sayed will become the first Muslim US senator when he takes office in January 2027.
