PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: As Spirit Airlines announced its intention to discontinue operations following failure to keep up with surging fuel prices, a claim began circulating on social media platforms that Elon Musk would be purchasing the airline, sparking speculation and questions. Let us analyze the origins of the viral claim and fact-check it.

Claim: Elon Musk is in talks to purchase Spirit Airlines

According to the viral claim, Elon Musk is in talks to purchase Spirit Airlines, with plans to completely reinvent air travel. The claim surfaced as the airline announced on Saturday, May 2, that it would be discontinuing its operations. 

The claim has spread on multiple social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, and has been amplified by several accounts. 

The comments under the viral posts were mixed, with many expressing support for the alleged decision of the former senior advisor to the president, while a few others expressed disagreement, indicating that many believe the claim to be authentic. 

Fact Check: The claim originated as a satire 

The claim, however, is false, as the Tesla CEO never made any public announcements about purchasing the airline. A search on search engines yielded no credible results by prominent media outlets, which, if true, would have been widely reported and discussed. 

Also, the rumor originated from a popular parody account called Hoops Crave, which describes itself in the bio as "satire." Hence, it can be concluded that the claim is made up for the sake of engagement. 

A fact check by Grok also confirmed this, stating, “It's a fake rumor from a parody account @HoopsCrave. Elon Musk is not purchasing Spirit Airlines. The airline announced it is shutting down operations in May 2026 due to bankruptcy and financial troubles. No credible reports link Musk to any deal.”

Spirit Airlines pilot delivers emotional farewell as airline shuts down

A pilot, who was flying one of the last flights of Spirit Airlines, bid an emotional farewell after serving the carrier for over 14 years.  

He began by acknowledging the notice from the union about the discontinuation of the service, saying, “We got a notice from our union that we're gonna be ceasing operations at 3 am Eastern Time today.” 

As the pilot progressed his speech, he appreciated "great conversation" along his journey, adding, “a lot of crazy stuff has happened, but it’s funny as we sit here, I will speak for myself.” 

He further continued in a trembling voice after getting emotional. “I don’t remember any bad times, just good ones.”
