According to the viral claim that surfaced on X, Jaden Smith moved to legally drop ‘Smith’ from his surname. 

The claim has been amplified by several accounts on the platform, garnering tens of thousands of views, sparking theories about a feud between Hollywood’s most popular father-son duos, indicating many believe the claim to be real.

Meanwhile, a few others slammed the post and speculations, dismissing them as fake and questioning the authenticity of the viral claim.

Fact Check: False, the claim originated as satire

Although Jaden dropped his surname to make his own identity, the claim that he has moved legally to remove his family name is not supported by facts.

A search on Google for the keywords ‘Jaden Smith dropping his surname,’ or ‘Jaden Smith Will Smith feud’ yielded no recent reports by prominent news or entertainment media outlets that support the claim, which, if true, would not go unreported.

Moreover, the claim originated from a popular satire account on X called ‘Hoops Crave,’ which states in its bio as ‘parody.’ The account has made similar unverified claims for the sake of engagement.

A fact check by Grok also debunked the claim, stating, “Jaden Smith has gone by the mononym 'Jaden' for his music releases and branding since around 2020, inspired by his sister Willow's similar choice."

Jaden Smith explains why he dropped his last name

In a 2024 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Jaden Smith was asked why he removed his last name, to which he shared, “I realized that Willow changed her name to Willow at some point. And that she was no longer Willow Smith."
