Mitch McConnell, 84, has remained hospitalized in Washington, DC, since June 14, 2026, after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest at his home. Since then, his office has released only limited updates, saying he is recovering and continuing to handle Senate work remotely.
As public interest in his condition grew, an X user shared a video showing a flooring company measuring inside McConnell's home.
The post sparked speculation that the house was being renovated or prepared for sale, while others questioned the whereabouts of his wife, Elaine Chao. McConnell lives at the Washington, DC, residence with his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao.
The X user wrote, "In a bizarre twist, it appears Mitch McConnell's house is now being renovated while he's in the hospital as a flooring company emerged after measuring inside." The post ended by asking, "It's unclear if Elaine Chao is back from China. Are they selling the house? Is he dead??"

The claim that flooring work is taking place at Mitch McConnell's Washington, DC, home is accurate. TMZ and other outlets reported that a contractor was seen leaving the residence on July 10, 2026, carrying carpet samples in white, blue, and gray. The contractor also said the homeowners were considering installing new tile.
However, claims that McConnell has died or that the home is being prepared for sale are unsupported. There is no evidence that he has died, and the reported flooring work does not indicate that the property is being sold.
The renovations could be related to routine home maintenance, changes to accommodate his recovery, or other personal reasons while he remains away from the home.
According to TMZ, Washington, DC-based producer Charlie Cotton visited McConnell's home in hopes of learning more about the senator's health, as his office has released very few updates.
During the visit, Cotton saw a man leaving the residence with carpet samples and spoke with him off camera. The man said the home was being considered for new carpeting and possibly new tile.
