WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump's recent decision to increase beef imports into the US has given rise to a wave of unverified claims online that the administration is importing contaminated beef from Argentina. The viral posts point to a 22-ton shipment of Argentine beef that China rejected in March after detecting chloramphenicol, a banned antibiotic. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Trump admin imported contaminated beef from Argentina

In late August 2026, social media users began raising questions about Argentine beef after Trump announced on Truth Social that his administration had reached deals to temporarily increase beef imports into the US.

One Facebook post claimed that Trump specifically said the US would buy beef from Argentina. The post then raised concerns about a separate "22-ton shipment of Argentine beef being rejected by China after authorities allegedly detected traces of an antibiotic that is banned under Chinese food-safety rules." 

The Facebook post began by referring to Trump’s reported comments about buying Argentine beef, “Trump says, ‘We'll buy Argentinian beef.’”

The post then questioned whether the beef Trump referred to could be connected to the shipment rejected by China. It cited reports that Chinese authorities had rejected a 22-ton shipment of Argentine beef after allegedly finding traces of a banned antibiotic.

The post also called for greater transparency about imported meat and how it is inspected before reaching US consumers. It concluded by asking, "But before anyone celebrates cheaper beef, maybe we should ask one simple question: Are we buying what someone else already refused?"

Fact Check: The claims are misleading

Social media posts claiming that the Trump administration is importing contaminated beef from Argentina rely on speculation, not evidence. Therefore, the claim is misleading.

The claim appears to come from a March 2026 incident in which China suspended imports from one Argentine meatpacking plant. Chinese authorities detected an antibiotic banned in both China and Argentina in a sample from a single beef shipment.

However, China did not suspend all Argentine beef imports. Major Argentine newspapers also reported that the suspension did not affect other meatpacking plants owned by the same company.

Several social media posts also shared a video of Trump discussing the impact of increased beef imports on American farmers.

In the video, Trump says, “Argentina is dying.” Although the video is genuine, Trump recorded it in October 2025, and it has no connection to his recent announcement about increasing US beef imports.

On August 21, 2026, President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that his administration had reached a deal to lower ground beef prices for American families.

He said, "The United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out-of-quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again."
