DALLAS, TEXAS: Mitch McConnell’s absence from the 2026 Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas has drawn attention. The two-day convention, held on September 9 and 10, featured President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance among its main speakers.

Amid the discussion, a video circulating on social media appears to show McConnell speaking at the convention before a technical glitch interrupts the feed. The clip has raised questions about whether McConnell was actually scheduled to appear at the Dallas event, either in person or through a video message.

Claim: Mitch McConnell was scheduled to attend 2026 midterm convention in Dallas

The rumor originated from an X user, Gunther Eagleman, who claimed that a video feed showing Mitch McConnell glitched and went black during an appearance at the 2026 Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas.

The post suggested that McConnell was supposed to appear at the convention remotely. Eagleman wrote, “Well, Mitch McConnell was apparently supposed to make an appearance at the big Republican convention in Dallas…”

The post then described an alleged technical problem with the video feed, claiming, “Then the video feed started glitching, the audio turned into robot soup, and right when you could finally make out ‘Mitch McConnell’ the whole damn screen went black.”

The X user further joked about the alleged interruption, writing, “Technical difficulties really said, ‘That’s enough, Mitch.’”

The attached 10-second video shows McConnell appearing on a large convention screen through a Zoom-style interface before heavy static distorts the image and the screen goes black. However, the incident did not occur at the actual 2026 Republican Midterm Convention.

Fact Check: The claim is false

The claim is false. Mitch McConnell was not scheduled to appear in person or remotely at the 2026 Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas. No video-feed glitch involving him occurred at the event.

The two-day convention took place at the American Airlines Center on September 9 and 10, 2026. The event focused on President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Republican candidates and the party’s campaign message.

The official speaker list included Trump, Vance, Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Mike Johnson, several House and Senate candidates, Cabinet officials and other Republican figures. McConnell was not listed as a speaker.

McConnell, who plans to retire when his Senate term ends in early 2027, has also made few public appearances since a fall in June 2026 that led to hospitalization and rehabilitation. 

Reports in September said his staff hoped he could return when the Senate reconvened around mid-September. However, there was no indication that he planned to take part in the Republican convention.

The video circulating online is an edited clip. It appears to place footage of McConnell, along with video-call graphics, onto a large screen at the convention. The clip then adds static, distorted audio, and a blackout for comedic effect. The video appears to reference McConnell’s past public episodes of freezing or struggling to speak, as well as his recent absence from public events.

The actual convention did experience some technical problems, including screen glitches during Trump’s remarks. However, reports about those incidents did not mention McConnell or any video appearance by him.
