WASHINGTON, DC: Viral posts have claimed that the alleged assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) was ‘staged.’

The claim, widely shared on X, also points to a prior remark by Karoline Leavitt.

The incident at the Washington Hilton involved a gunman opening fire, prompting a rapid security response. Authorities have since confirmed that a suspect was identified and taken into custody.

Claim: Trump WHCD shooting was a ‘staged assassination attempt’

Social media posts suggest that the shooting was orchestrated, citing Leavitt’s earlier comment that “shots will be fired” as supposed foreknowledge.

The claim has been amplified alongside speculation that the incident was designed for political or public attention.

Ahead of the event, Leavitt told the media that Trump’s speech would be funny and entertaining, insisting that the “American leader would bring heat.”

Leavitt added there would be “shots fired in the room,” using the phrase as political slang for sharp verbal attacks.

However, hours after her remarks, actual gunshots were reported at the event on April 25, 2026.

After loud noises were heard at the hotel lobby of Washington’s Hilton, Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Leavitt were evacuated by Secret Service from the site, with panic taking over the hall.

These posts also question the authenticity of the event, implying that the arrest and response were part of a coordinated effort.

Fact Check: No evidence supports claim that Trump WHCD shooting was staged

Multiple news reports confirm that law enforcement responded to an active shooting situation at the venue, and a suspect was identified and taken into custody.

The individual, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, has not been linked to Trump or his associates.

Officials have not found any signs that the incident was staged. Standard security procedures were followed in response to gunfire at a high-profile public event.

Reports confirm that one officer was injured during the incident. The officer, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, is recovering. Trump said the officer was “in great shape,” underscoring the seriousness of the situation.

As for Leavitt’s comment, there is no official evidence linking her statement to any prior knowledge of the shooting. The phrase appears to have been used in a rhetorical, political context rather than as a literal warning.

Trump described the suspect as a “very sick person” and said authorities were continuing their investigation. The suspect is expected to face charges including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, according to US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.

Officials said preliminary findings indicate the suspect was a guest at the hotel where the dinner was being held.

The claim that the WHCD shooting involving Donald Trump was a “staged assassination attempt” is not supported by evidence. Verified reports confirm that law enforcement responded to a real incident, a suspect was arrested, and an officer was injured.

There is no credible proof linking the event to any coordinated or fabricated effort. The viral claim appears to be based on speculation rather than verified facts.
