Fact Check: Were dead bodies found on Jeffrey Epstein's property?

WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media post claimed authorities have discovered dead bodies on a property owned by convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein and alleged the Trump administration is blocking an investigation into it. The claim has spread widely online as renewed scrutiny of Epstein's properties and the Justice Department's handling of Epstein-related records continues to fuel speculation.

Claim: Dead bodies have been found on Jeffrey Epstein's property

The origin of the rumor remains unclear. An X post claimed, "BREAKING: Dead bodies have been located on a property owned by Jeffrey Epstein, according to reports. The Trump admin is BLOCKING the investigation."

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) said it cannot provide New Mexico with unredacted Epstein-related files because doing so would violate federal laws, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses.

In a recent statement, the department said, “Federal law, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses do not allow us to release millions of unredacted documents.”

The statement came after pressure from New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, a Democrat, who accused the Trump administration of obstructing the state’s investigation by withholding key documents.

In a public letter, Torrez argued that the requested files were necessary for the state’s reopened investigation into Epstein-related activities.

The DOJ rejected that criticism, saying Torrez’s request exceeded the department’s legal authority. The agency said it would continue following federal laws and existing court orders, arguing that releasing certain unredacted documents would violate legal requirements.

Fact Check: False, the claim is not supported with evidence

However, these reports do not confirm that authorities discovered dead bodies on any property owned by Jeffrey Epstein.

The viral claim appears to combine an ongoing dispute over access to Epstein-related records with unverified allegations about possible graves, creating a misleading impression that investigators uncovered human remains.

No law enforcement agency has announced such a discovery, and no credible reports have confirmed that bodies were found on Epstein's property.

A Community Note attached to the post also clarified that no dead bodies have been found on Epstein's property.

It stated that the claim appears to trace back to an unverified 2019 allegation that remains part of an ongoing New Mexico investigation, but searches have not produced any confirmed findings.

While the Trump administration's Justice Department has faced accusations of delaying the release of unredacted Epstein-related files, officials have said they have provided available materials and are complying with legal restrictions on releasing certain documents.

The Epstein controversy has remained a political challenge for the Trump administration since the president began his second term in 2025. Critics have accused the administration of not meeting its promises of greater transparency and have raised questions about whether influential individuals connected to Epstein could be protected. Trump, who was previously part of Epstein’s social circle, has denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes or knowledge of his illegal activities.
