LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The recent revelation of an upside-down flag displayed outside Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s house has ignited a firestorm of controversy, sparking discussions about political bias, judicial integrity, and the perceived role of the judiciary in times of national turmoil.

Former White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin, speaking on CNN’s 'State of the Union', raised a poignant question: What if the roles were reversed? What if a liberal justice, such as Sonia Sotomayor, had displayed such a flag after Trump’s election victory in 2016?

Challenges to judicial integrity

"If after Donald Trump won in 2016, Justice [Sonia Sotomayor] hung a flag upside down on her front lawn, we, Republicans, would be calling for her resignation," Farah Griffin said Sunday.

“I find it deeply disturbing, and I don‘t think we can gloss over it,” she added.

The revelations have faced widespread criticism from Democratic circles, with many Democrats urging Alito to step away from any Supreme Court cases related to January 6.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) urged Alito to apologize for "showing disrespect toward the American flag and aligning with right-wing violent insurrectionists."

"He must recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 election and [former President Trump]," Jeffries emphasized, adding that Congress should contemplate enacting new ethics reform legislation for the high court.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill) similarly called on Alito to recuse himself from cases tied to January 6, 2021, and the 2020 election, stating, "The display of an upside-down American flag — a symbol of the 'Stop the Steal' movement — unmistakably suggests bias."

Alito responded to the Times, asserting, "I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag," and further remarked, "It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor's use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs."
