MILAN, ITALY: Fans at the 2026 Winter Olympics men’s hockey preliminary round drew attention by waving a Greenland flag as the United States defeated Denmark 6-3 on Saturday in Milan. The display, orchestrated by Latvia-based supporters, was intended as a symbol of European solidarity rather than a political statement, sparking discussion on social media.

Vita Kalniņa and her husband, Alexander Kalniņš, who live in Germany and support Latvian hockey, held up a large Greenland flag during warmups and again when Denmark scored the opening goal. Their gesture quickly became a talking point online, with many viewers interpreting it as a show of European unity amid ongoing debates over Greenland’s strategic importance.

The flag was raised enthusiastically

The Greenland flag appeared prominently in the stands after Denmark took an early 2-1 lead. The Americans then dominated offensively, rallying to a 6-3 victory. Kalniņa and Kalniņš explained that their display highlighted Greenland as part of the Danish kingdom and served as a message of support for both countries during the Olympic matchup.



“We are Europeans, and as Europeans, we must hold together,” Kalniņš told The Associated Press. He emphasized that the gesture was meant to celebrate unity, not provoke American fans.

Spectators at the game echoed this perspective. Danish fan Dennis Petersen said, “It doesn’t matter what sport it is — hockey, tennis, or football — it has nothing to do with politics. They are athletes, not politicians.” American fan Rem de Rohan added, “This is a time to focus on the game, country versus country, and enjoy the competition."

Fans on social media reacted quickly

The moment drew humorous reactions on social media. One user joked, “Team USA won; do we get Greenland now?” Another wrote, “We just destroyed Denmark in hockey, and now we invade Greenland at dawn.”



Despite the playful online chatter, the Kalniņas maintained that their action was about European solidarity. They noted that Greenland’s people decide their own future, while the gesture recognized the island’s current status within Denmark.



US comeback seals the game



After trailing 2-1 through the first period, the United States regained control, dominating the remainder of the match to secure a 6-3 victory. The Greenland flag moment added an unusual subplot to the preliminary round, blending sport with cultural symbolism and drawing global attention to the couple’s display.
