NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York City mayor Eric Adams was subjected to furious internet trolling after he used a bizarre 9/11 reference to explain why NYC is the ‘greatest city on the globe’.

On Sunday, December 17, the Democratic mayor appeared on WPIX-TV’s 'PIX on Politics' where the host Dan Mannarino asked him to describe a 'very eventful 2023' in one word.

The former police officer, who became New York's second Black mayor when he took office last year, reacted with two words: 'New York' and then went on to elaborate with the puzzling reference.

“This is a place where every day you wake up you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our trade center through a person who’s celebrating a new business that’s about to open,” Adams said.

“This is a very, very complicated city, and that’s why it’s the greatest city on the globe,” he continued, according to Daily Mail.

Rough 2,753 people died in New York on September 11th after two hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Internet reacts to Eric Adams’ remarks

Social media users soon picked up on Adams' remarks and used the interview to ridicule the mayor. “This may go down as the worst answer of 2023,” one user mocked.

“I’m not sure that selling New York as a place where you can experience 9/11 is the best argument that can be made for the world’s greatest city…” the second user slammed.

“I didn’t think Eric Adams could top his comment that he would like to retire in Golan Heights, but “come to NYC and experience 9/11” does it. Love how he describes the plane crashing into the tower like it’s them lighting the Christmas tree,” the third user trolled.

“Feels like a Norm joke. Can't be real,” the fourth user slammed while the fifth one wrote “How does anyone have that thought let alone express it in public as mayor of New York? Also, New York is two words”

“Every time I think this man could not possibly say anything more bizarre than whatever his most recent statement has been, he outdoes himself,” another user said.

“Damn I didn't know Mayor Adams was a Zoomer with an edgy memes Twitter account!” one more wrote.

Why did Eric Adams slam the Biden Administration?

Adams’ bizarre remarks came after he chastised the Biden administration and the federal government for their 'baffling' failure to solve the migrant situation.

When questioned in a Sunday interview why his fellow Democrats in DC have rejected his repeated, in-person calls for assistance, Adams claimed he was at a loss and that the migrant problem had expanded to other places.

“I find it baffling because now you are hearing the coalitions that started with Eric, now it has gone to Chicago, Massachusetts, Denver... so many municipalities are joining me and saying this is impacting our city, so I'm not sure why we're not seeing a response,” Adams told ABC 7.

Adams estimates that the city will spend $12 billion over the next three years to deal with the surge, including the establishment of large-scale emergency shelters, the rental of hotels, and the provision of other government services to migrants.
