WASHINGTON, DC: A business that California Governor Gavin Newsom partially owns posted a job listing for $16 an hour, despite new state legislation requiring fast food restaurants to pay their employees $20 per hour, according to the New York Post.

A ZipRecruiter posting describes PlumpJack Cafe in Olympic Valley as seeking a part-time busser who 'will aim to assist the food server... to ensure guest satisfaction during all aspects of the dining experience.'

Notably, PlumpJack Cafe is one of a network of eateries owned by a firm Newsom started in 1992.

The busser's pay is $16 per hour plus tips, according to the job posting. However, because of the new $20 fast food minimum wage that went into effect on Monday, April 1, a food service employee would make more money working at a McDonald's than at an upscale restaurant and bar.

Notably, as his team pointed out, once Newsom was elected governor in 2018, he placed PlumpJack Group under a blind trust and has since stopped being involved in the day-to-day operations of his companies.

A spokesperson for the governor informed the New York Post, "He has no role in any of the holdings that may be held by the blind trust."

Moreover, the new law applies to eateries that are part of a national chain with 60 or more locations and that provide little or no table service. From the previous base salary of $16 per hour, it increases the minimum by $4 per hour.

Moreover, according to its website, PlumpJack Group has four vineyards, four restaurants, and four bars. As a result, it falls well short of the requirements to fulfill the $20 per hour pay level.

However, some referred to the lesser salary for employees at a restaurant that charges $67 for a steak and $37 for pasta as hypocritical when contrasted to a fast-food restaurant that serves inexpensive burgers.

Internet slams Gavin Newsom for offering $16/hr job despite new state law

Many people on the internet were furious and expressed their disbelief at a business owned by Gavin Newsom offering jobs at $16/hr despite new state law of $20/hr.

A user wrote on X, "For thee but not for me" while one added, "He just unemployed tens of thousands of people and still has no interest in giving his employees, in his words 'the pay they deserve'."

A person also stated, "I had no idea he was involved in Plump Jacks. I'll be sure to avoid it when I'm skiing at Squaw Valley" whereas one mentioned, "I would have expected nothing less from the snake oil salesman of the year!"

A user further wrote, "Lmaooo who did their homework I love it. Just like he didn’t wear a mask and made everyone else" As one added, "'Rules for thee, but not for me,' should be the official slogan for democrats."
