Barack Obama leaves Caitlin Clark starstruck as he joins WNBA All-Stars on the court

Few expected Barack Obama to become one of the biggest attractions of WNBA All-Star weekend. The former president kicked off his visit at the Obama Presidential Center's Changemaker Day event, where he praised the remarkable rise of women's basketball and congratulated players for inspiring a new generation of fans. His appearance immediately set the tone for one of the weekend's most talked-about off-court moments.

After addressing the players, Obama traded speeches for sneakers—or at least basketball moves. Laughing with players, crouching into a defensive stance and joining a light-hearted scrimmage, he embraced the relaxed atmosphere.

Obama also addressed the full group of WNBA All-Stars, praising the remarkable growth of the women's game and the athletes driving its momentum. "Some of you I'm meeting for the first time. All of you are extraordinary and I could not be bigger fans," he told the players. "The way the game has been growing lately, the way it's been picking up and people paying attention to your excellence, I think it's been something for basketball fans, generally, a sight to see. It's been making me happy."

When Obama reached Clark, he offered words of encouragement that reflected his own experience navigating life in the public eye. "You're great. You're fantastic," Obama told her. "Don't let all this nonsense get you down." Obama reminded the young star not to let the outside noise overshadow what first made her fall in love with basketball. "To have that much immersion in nonsense... don't lose that joy," he said. "The game's the game, and you're a hooper." Clark's response revealed the humility that has often defined her public persona. "I try to be a hooper... sometimes," she replied with a smile.

Later, Clark admitted the meeting left a lasting impression.

"It was obviously super cool," she told reporters. "He just complimented me for the way that I handle everything, obviously with everything that's been going on." She added that Obama's perspective resonated because of the immense public attention he himself experienced during his presidency. "He's somebody that has been in front of the media quite a bit and he reminded me, 'When I got famous in my 40s, I didn't have to do it in my 20s.'" For Clark, the conversation was one she expects to remember for years. "It's a moment I'll probably remember for the rest of my life," she said.
