WASHINGTON, DC: Under Donald Trump’s watch, the United States turned into a sea of red, white, and blue as the nation marked its 250th anniversary with coast-to-coast celebrations. But the day unfolded like a story with unexpected twists at every turn. It began in sweltering heat, with approaching thunderstorms forcing thousands to evacuate the National Mall and prompting the cancellation of Washington’s Independence Day parade. The sweltering heat did little to deter members of a white nationalist group, who marched through the nation’s capital anyway. Trump also pressed ahead with his 'Salute to America' address despite multiple delays, unveiling historic American flags and delivering a speech focused on national pride.

The plans to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a massive event at the National Mall were complicated by severe storms that formed near the capital. Hours before the 'Salute to America' celebration got underway, dangerous heat, thunderstorms and lightning forced authorities to evacuate large sections of the National Mall. Thousands of attendees were directed to leave the grounds and seek shelter in nearby museums and federal buildings as storm clouds rolled over Washington. The city's Independence Day parade had already been canceled because of the weather, and several Freedom 250 events were delayed.

Once the clouds cleared, military aircraft dominated the field. The celebration featured a series of military tributes, including ceremonial performances, appearances by service members, and dramatic flyovers by military aircraft above the National Mall. Against the backdrop of monuments and American flags, the flyovers became one of the day's most photographed moments, reinforcing the patriotic theme that dominated the evening's festivities.

While the Independence Day parade was called off due to extreme temperatures, another procession through Washington drew national attention for very different reasons. Hundreds of members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front, dressed in matching khaki pants, white face coverings, and caps, marched near Union Station before moving through Capitol Hill carrying Confederate flags. The group carried several flags, including American, Confederate, and Patriot Front insignia flags. Some were seen carrying upside-down American flags. Images shared on social media showed large groups moving through transit stations before emerging onto the streets to begin their march through the nation's capital. Meanwhile, a video captured roughly 400 people marching in military-like formations while chanting 'reclaim America' and 'life, liberty, victory.'

Trump paused the celebration to spotlight two of the country's oldest surviving American flags. The first flag Trump mentioned dated back to 1777 and 'bears the 13 stars and 13 stripes of the 13 states that declared independence on the Fourth of July.' 'This was the flag that flew victorious at Saratoga [in 1777],' the president said, 'and these are the real deals.' 'These are flags that have seen a lot,' Trump continued his lesson. 'These were the stars and stripes that flew triumphant when the British waved the white flag of surrender at Yorktown [in 1781]. That was a big surrender. Nobody thought that was possible.' Later in his remarks, Trump welcomed the grandchildren of Wild West legend 'Buffalo Bill' Cody to the stage before drawing attention to a historic American flag. He told the crowd that 'they stand alongside one of the first American flags ever to fly over our expanding nation. It was carried west just as Lewis and Clark began their journey in 1803.'

Washington wasn't the only city facing unexpected drama. During Independence Day festivities in New York, a fire broke out near the Brooklyn Bridge following a fireworks-related incident, prompting firefighters to rush to the scene as smoke billowed over the East River. Emergency crews quickly contained the blaze, allowing nearby celebrations to continue. Although no major injuries were reported, the dramatic images of flames against the iconic bridge quickly spread online.

Fireworks deliver grand finale

After hours of uncertainty, delays, and political theater, the night ended with the spectacle everyone had been waiting for. A massive fireworks display illuminated the Washington Monument, the Capitol, and the Lincoln Memorial, bathing the capital in bursts of red, white, and blue. Trump had promised an unforgettable finale despite the weather, and thousands who stayed until the end watched the sky erupt in color as America marked 250 years of independence.
