Trump strolls through highly secretive Zhongnanhai garden with Xi during Beijing visit

Seated inside an intricately designed pavilion, Trump and Xi shared another warm moment as the Chinese president reflected on the rich history and political significance of Zhongnanhai. The massive compound is built around two artificial lakes that were created as a private retreat for emperors.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were also present at the compound as the two leaders discussed the age of the trees in Zhongnanhai.

The 79-year-old president, who recently oversaw a major makeover of the White House Rose Garden, appeared deeply impressed by the serenity of the historic compound. “These are the most beautiful roses anyone has ever seen,” Trump remarked while walking past green columns and archways. As the two leaders made their way toward the tea room, Trump was overheard saying that Xi had promised to send him roses for the White House Garden.

Xi Jinping’s decision to host Trump at Zhongnanhai is being viewed as a major diplomatic signal. Trump was not invited to the tightly guarded compound during his 2017 China visit, making this year’s invitation a clear reflection of Xi’s more personal and symbolic approach toward relations with the US leader.
