Kennedy Center goes behind fencing after judge blocks Trump’s name, what happens next?

Before the months of signage disputes, scaffolding and construction preparations, the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was instantly recognizable by its long white-marble facade overlooking the Potomac. The building has served as the nation’s living memorial to President John F Kennedy for decades, hosting presidents, performers and major cultural events.

The building began looking markedly different after the Kennedy Center board moved to rename the institution in Trump’s honor. Large letters bearing Trump’s name were installed on the front portico, physically altering one of Washington’s most familiar cultural landmarks. But the change quickly became the subject of a court battle. In May, US District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board had violated federal law by adding Trump’s name and ordered it removed.

The Kennedy Center complied with the court order in June and removed Trump’s name, but the building did not immediately return to its familiar appearance. Scaffolding and large tarps remained across sections of the facade where the lettering had been displayed.

The fight took another turn on September 15. The board had proposed adding an inscription stating that the Kennedy Center was “renovated and restored by President Donald J Trump,” while also seeking to name the grounds the “President Donald J Trump Plaza.” Cooper blocked both proposals, ruling that the board could not circumvent his earlier order by describing the new wording as a recognition rather than a memorial. The Justice Department appealed the decision.

Less than a day later, another dramatic change appeared outside the Kennedy Center. Workers began erecting fencing and barriers around the main building on September 16 after the Trump-aligned board voted to close most of the venue for extensive repairs. The barriers stretched across areas that had remained publicly accessible just a day earlier, while visitors were turned away from the building. The closure followed warnings from Kennedy Center officials about deteriorating infrastructure and safety problems. A section of ceiling plaster had fallen in a main hallway earlier in September, adding urgency to calls for repairs. The center later told a federal court that the immediate shutdown was prompted by “acute risks to public safety” and would initially last at least seven days while engineers assessed the building.

The longer-term future of the building remains unsettled. The board has approved a renovation project that could close most of the Kennedy Center for up to two years. Congress has allocated $257 million for repairs, but Trump has said the renovation should not proceed if courts ultimately prevent his administration from receiving recognition on the building. The closure itself is now also under legal scrutiny. Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democratic Kennedy Center trustee who brought the original lawsuit over Trump’s name, challenged the shutdown, prompting Cooper to order officials to explain whether the plan conflicts with his earlier court order. For now, the Kennedy Center remains caught between a planned overhaul and continuing litigation — while the fencing outside provides the clearest visual sign yet of how dramatically the landmark has changed.
