Melania talks about preserving White House history while Trump’s construction transforms it

“As stewards of the places shaped by those before us, we are tasked with making decisions that honor future generations,” Melania said. “It is our duty to ensure that the choices we make today are worthy of the legacy we pass forward.” Her remarks came against an extraordinary backdrop. The Rose Garden where guests gathered has itself been transformed, the East Wing has disappeared to make way for Donald Trump's sprawling new ballroom, construction cranes now tower over the grounds, a new presidential helipad has altered the South Lawn and the North Portico has only just emerged from months behind scaffolding.

Melania delivered her remarks from a location that illustrated the changes taking place around the White House better than almost anywhere else. “The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America,” Melania told guests, saying generations of American “ideals and stories” had been woven into the building. The setting carried another layer of significance because Melania herself previously spearheaded a major restoration of the Rose Garden. During Trump's first term, the first lady oversaw the 2020 project, which updated drainage and infrastructure while restoring elements of the garden's historic design. The White House highlighted that work again while promoting her preservation record this week. But the space has since undergone another dramatic transformation.

The biggest transformation is taking place only steps away. The historic East Wing was demolished in 2025 to clear the site for Trump's new White House ballroom. The project has since moved rapidly from demolition to major construction, with cranes and the emerging structure now changing views across the presidential complex. The East Wing had for decades housed offices associated with first ladies and their staffs. Its demolition also eliminated the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden. Melania did not mention the ballroom or East Wing demolition during her preservation address. Instead, she emphasized how individual architectural decisions can shape the way future generations understand the White House. “No detail is too small,” she said, adding that seemingly insignificant choices can influence how people “perceive their place in history.”

As major construction continued around her, Melania used her speech to highlight projects she had personally undertaken as first lady. She recalled discovering and conserving historic Zuber wallpaper hidden in the President's Dining Room, describing its restoration as “an investment in the future of our nation's story.” The White House also highlighted her work on the Queens' Bedroom and Bathroom, the tennis pavilion, floors in the East Room and State Entrance and Hall, the President's Elevator, bowling alley and Children's Garden. “Great design transcends aesthetic appeal,” she said. “It shapes our lived experiences.”
