Melania Trump’s White House Rose Garden: What changed between 2020 and 2026

The earlier Rose Garden featured the same broad central lawn but was surrounded by mature plantings and bursts of seasonal color. The garden had evolved considerably since Mellon's Kennedy-era design, and some of its original Katherine crabapple trees had already been removed over the years. During the 2020 project, the remaining crabapples were removed and relocated elsewhere on the White House grounds. New roses included varieties such as the White House Rose, JFK Rose, Pope John Paul II Rose and Peace Rose. Melania's renovation therefore represented a significant visual change of its own — years before her husband's later overhaul transformed its centerpiece.

The Rose Garden that emerged from Melania Trump's 2020 renovation retained its defining rectangular lawn, framed by new limestone walkways and carefully arranged flower beds. Her project was intended to bring the space closer to Mellon's 1962 blueprint while tackling practical problems including drainage, accessibility and aging infrastructure. The renovation introduced uniform 36-inch limestone paths for wheelchair access, upgraded utilities and replaced vulnerable boxwoods with a disease-resistant variety. The result was an unusually open view across the lawn, with pastel roses and seasonal plantings running along either side.

The grassy rectangle that anchored both the historic Rose Garden and Melania's 2020 restoration no longer exists. Trump ordered the lawn replaced in 2025 with a large white limestone patio, saying the new surface would work better for entertaining and events. The surrounding roses and clipped greenery remain, meaning the site is still recognizably the Rose Garden. But the uninterrupted expanse of stone fundamentally changes the view that greeted visitors after Melania's restoration. Trump has used the revamped area for dinners and events and referred to it as the 'Rose Garden Club.'

The central lawn, once the visual anchor of the garden, is the biggest casualty of the latest redesign. The grass had been central to Mellon's 1962 concept and remained intact during Melania's 2020 renovation. Yet not everything from Melania's project vanished. Roses, boxwoods and other perimeter landscaping continue to frame the patio. The space has instead accumulated new features, including bronze statues and prominent gold lettering along the colonnade. That makes the transformation more nuanced than a complete demolition of Melania's garden: much of its planted perimeter survives, while the vast green center that defined the space has been replaced.

The transformation provides an unusual backdrop to Melania's latest comments about preserving the White House. Speaking at the Presidential Sites Summit in September, the first lady said, “The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America,” and emphasized the importance of architecture and design in carrying the building's history forward. Her own Rose Garden project remains part of that story. The White House specifically highlighted the 2020 restoration among Melania's design accomplishments, saying it renewed the historic design while improving infrastructure and accessibility. But photographs of Melania speaking in the garden today capture just how much the setting has continued to evolve: the lawn preserved during her restoration has become an event patio, while the flowers and formal landscaping around its edges provide one of the clearest links to the garden she unveiled six years ago.
