Mike Johnson launches 22-state midterm blitz as Republicans fight to retain House majority

House Speaker Mike Johnson is launching an extensive campaign tour that will take him to more than 40 congressional districts across 22 states in the final weeks before Election Day. The six-week effort will see Johnson campaign alongside Republican incumbents and challengers as the GOP seeks to retain control of the House. His itinerary includes Pennsylvania, New York, California, Texas, Michigan and Wisconsin, among other states.

Johnson's itinerary stretches from Maine and New Hampshire in the Northeast to California and Washington on the West Coast. It also includes competitive states such as Arizona, Nevada, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The trip follows an extensive August campaign swing during which Johnson planned stops in more than 30 districts. His latest tour extends that effort into the closing weeks of the election, with Republicans simultaneously defending incumbents and supporting challengers.

Johnson's tour comes as Republicans are expanding their spending into districts they previously considered relatively secure. Since September 1, major Republican groups and donors have begun spending in at least 39 additional congressional races, according to a Reuters analysis. Wisconsin Rep Bryan Steil is among those receiving new support. Conservative super PACs spent approximately $1.5 million on his race in September, despite his district being rated Lean Republican by the Cook Political Report.

Republicans are not limiting their efforts to defending incumbents. Party-aligned groups have also invested in Democratic-held seats, including Nevada's 3rd Congressional District, represented by Susie Lee, and North Carolina's 1st District, represented by Don Davis. Both districts featured in a $22 million advertising campaign launched by the Republican-aligned American Action Network in August. Johnson's tour similarly combines defensive stops with efforts to support Republican challengers.

Johnson's nationwide campaign comes amid substantial Republican spending on congressional races. Republican groups have reserved at least $888 million in advertising for the coming weeks, compared with at least $666 million reserved by Democrats, according to AdImpact figures reported by Reuters. The spending includes efforts to defend Republican incumbents in districts that voted comfortably for Trump in 2024. Democrats argue that the expanded Republican spending reflects vulnerabilities, while GOP officials describe it as a strategy to protect their seats and support their candidates.

Johnson's campaign blitz comes as Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, with the November 3 elections set to determine which party controls the chamber next year. As of September 27, the House had 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent who caucuses with Republicans and two vacancies. Democrats would need a net gain of at least four seats under that composition to secure control. Johnson's 22-state itinerary reflects the Republican Party's efforts to defend its existing seats while competing for Democratic-held districts.
