Trump’s Kennedy Center fight takes dramatic turn as Grand Foyer ceiling comes crashing down

A section of the ceiling inside the Kennedy Center's Grand Foyer collapsed, leaving chunks of material scattered across the building's unmistakable red carpet. Photos from the incident show debris spread across part of the long hallway, which connects the center's three main performance auditoriums. The collapse occurred during stormy weather in Washington. Despite the dramatic scene left behind, nobody was injured.

Closer photographs reveal a sizable opening in the Grand Foyer ceiling where the material broke away. Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi blamed the structural failure on "decades of neglect and deferred maintenance" and renewed calls for the building to undergo the renovation championed by Trump. "The longer the delay, the worse the infrastructure gets," Daravi said.

Before the damage, the Kennedy Center's Grand Foyer was known for its imposing scale: a vast red-carpeted corridor stretching hundreds of feet beneath towering ceilings and enormous chandeliers. The space has hosted presidents, performers and audiences for decades and connects some of the Kennedy Center's most important performance venues.

The Grand Foyer has also served as a backdrop for Trump himself. Shortly after taking control of the center's board in 2025, the president appeared in the Grand Foyer as he began laying out his vision for reshaping the institution. The physical damage comes amid a much larger fight over Trump's efforts to transform the performing arts institution established as a memorial to President John F Kennedy. Trump replaced much of the center's board after returning to office, and the newly constituted board elected him chairman. At the center of the controversy is a sweeping renovation proposal that Trump and his allies argue is necessary to rescue an aging building. Plans call for more than $250 million in work, including structural repairs to the center's major theaters, upgrades to electrical and plumbing systems and roughly $20 million for improvements to public spaces. The Trump-aligned board initially planned to close the main campus for approximately two years while the work was completed.

Trump's name subsequently appeared on the building, triggering a legal battle. A federal judge ruled in May that Trump's name had been added unlawfully and ordered it removed while also blocking the planned shutdown for renovations. The Trump-aligned board has since voted again to place an inscription on the facade reading, "The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J Trump." The dispute remains tied up in court.

Trump’s supporters say the president is trying to restore an aging national institution after years of deferred maintenance. Opponents argue that necessary repairs have become entangled with Trump’s efforts to reshape the center’s identity, programming, artwork and even its name. The ceiling collapse has only intensified that debate. Days after cameras captured a crane dismantling 'Blue' outside, photographs of rubble scattered across the Grand Foyer have supplied another dramatic image of a Kennedy Center already undergoing profound change — even as the legal battle over what it ultimately becomes remains unresolved.
