Trump’s White House emerges from months under wraps as workers strip scaffolding to unveil iconic entrance

The newly exposed entrance looks dramatically different from what tourists had been seeing throughout July and August. After scaffolding went up in late June, workers covered much of the North Portico with enormous tarps. Rather than leaving plain construction sheeting in front of one of America's most photographed buildings, the coverings were printed to mimic what they concealed. The unusual shroud reproduced the White House's white columns, windows and hanging lantern, creating the appearance of a giant two-dimensional version of the entrance stretched across the construction site.

The restoration was not simply another scheduled maintenance job. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Trump had personally noticed damage to the columns while greeting foreign leaders at the entrance and pushed for them to be repaired. The White House said crews were carrying out standard restoration, including stone and plaster repairs necessitated by age and weather exposure. Officials also said the historic columns themselves were not being replaced.

Not everything happening behind the coverings was visible from Pennsylvania Avenue. The project also included upgrades intended to strengthen security at the White House's front entrance. Officials said in July that the North Portico doors were undergoing “security enhancements and upgrades,” although specific details about the measures were not disclosed.

he final stage of the project briefly became the scene of an emergency on September 7. A construction worker was injured while helping remove scaffolding from the North Portico, prompting DC Fire and EMS to conduct a specialized “high-angle rescue.” By the following day, crews were back at work dismantling the remaining structure and exposing the restored columns.

For the first time in months, visitors looking toward the north side of the White House can once again see its famous entrance without an enormous covering blocking the view. The timing of the North Portico reveal is significant. Xi Jinping is due to visit Washington later this month, with a state dinner scheduled for September 24. The White House expects the portico work to be finished before his arrival. That means the restored entrance could soon return to one of its most recognizable roles: providing the backdrop as an American president formally welcomes a visiting world leader.
