Zohran Mamdani turns heads in flamboyant Arsenal soccer thobe for Eid celebration

Eid al-Adha is the second of two major holidays in Islam. "Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden," Mamdani posted on social media. "It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most," he shared.

Mamdani has previously spoken openly about his attachment to the north London football club, thanks to its historic African players, a connection that he said resonated with him growing up in East Africa. That football detail is also timely as the US prepares to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico next month.

Mamdani has increasingly leaned into relatable online moments during his campaign, especially among younger progressive voters active on social media platforms.

The Arsenal-themed Eid outfit added another layer to that strategy by combining personal identity with one of the world’s most recognizable soccer brands.

Mamdani was accompanied at the event by US congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who paired her black suit with a headscarf. The headscarf she wore has now become a topic of debate on social media. Both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez are known for their progressive policies and stance and their roots in the Bronx.

Born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin, Mamdani is married to Syrian artist Rama Duwaji and is now one of the most recognizable political figures in the US. He's South Asian, East African, American, Muslim and a football fan.
