Glenn Close explains hip replacement and shares upcoming appearances
In a social media post on Tuesday, October 20, Close addressed fans in a selfie video shared on Instagram, thanking them for their support and explaining why she had been using a cane. “I wanted to just hop on and thank you for all of your love, and to explain why I have a cane,” she said. “I have a cane because I have had a complete hip replacement.”
The actress explained that she underwent the procedure after discovering that her left hip was in really bad shape. The 'Fatal Attraction' star said she wanted to keep herself in good condition so she could take on whatever challenges came her way.
“My whole thing right now is to keep myself in running order so that I can really leap into whatever challenges come my way,” Close said. She hopes the cane will only be temporary and is looking forward to attending upcoming premieres.

Close is scheduled to travel to London next week for the premiere of 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' before returning to New York for the season 2 premiere of 'All’s Fair'. She hopes to be fully present at both events, even if she cannot yet run around or climb mountains as she might have previously.
“So I hope to be fully present there, and maybe not running around going up mountains, but at least my old self,” the '101 Dalmatians' actress said. She reassured her supporters, adding, “Don’t worry. I’m feeling great. I have my wonderful, wonderful family around me, and I look forward to all the adventures coming, so love to everyone.”
Close was recently photographed using a cane at the premiere of 'La Bola Negra' during the 2026 NewFest at SVA Theater in New York City on October 15. The Spanish-language drama won the 2026 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director.

Glenn Close shares Montana family life and upcoming honorary Oscar
Away from her professional commitments, Close recently offered a glimpse into her quieter life with family at her home in Montana. In an Instagram video posted on August 25, she shared that she was home and enjoying some downtime.
“Hi everyone, I’m home,” she said before describing the peaceful moment. “I’m home, calming down. Wearing my mama’s shirt, letting the wind blow through my white hair,” Close added. “Watching the sun go down. I feel blessed. Hi to you all. Bye.”
In the caption accompanying the video, the 'Hillbilly Elegy' actress noted that her beloved Havanese dog, Pip, was also with her.
Close left New York for Montana in 2019 to create an enclave for herself and her three siblings. In 2021, she told 'Mountain Outlaw' that her sisters, Jessie and Tina, and her brother, Alex, live nearby. Following her upcoming premieres, she is scheduled to appear on November 15 at the 17th Governors Awards, where she and Sir Ridley Scott are among the stars set to receive honorary Oscars.
The eight-time Oscar nominee previously spoke to Pete Davidson for Variety's Actors on Actors in 2021 about the possibility of never winning the coveted statuette. Close said she thought “it might be cool to never get” an Oscar.
“Is it better to be wheeled out in a wheelchair and get the lifetime achievement award? You don’t have to make a speech,” she said.
