WASHINGTON, DC: Despite getting caught up in a late-breaking controversy, entrepreneur Bernie Moreno won in the fierce Ohio Republican Senate primary on Tuesday, March 19, moving on to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen Sherrod Brown in November, according to the New York Post.

Sen JD Vance (R-Ohio) and former president Donald Trump supported Moreno, the CEO of Collection Auto Group, who presented himself as a populist follower of the 45th president's Make America Great Again campaign.

With the help of Trump, Moreno defeated Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose as well as State Senator Matt Dolan, who had the backing of GOP Gov Mike DeWine and former Republican Sen Rob Portman.

In his victory speech, Moreno said, "I want to thank President Trump, for all he did for me for this campaign." He said he spoke with Trump soon after it was predicted that he would win the Senate primary. Moreno called Trump's support "unwavering".

Wondering if Brown "is going to wear with honor his 99% voting record with Joe Biden", Moreno added, "I wear with honor my endorsement from President Trump."

Notably, Ohio's rightward trend makes it one of the best Senate pickup prospects for Republicans this season, according to most analysts. In four of the six presidential contests since 2000, voters in Buckeye State have supported the Republican nominee. In 2020, Trump defeated President Biden by eight percentage points.

AdImpact, a website that records advertising expenditures, indicates that the Duty and Country PAC spent $2.7 million on a television ad emphasizing Moreno's strong affiliation with Trump. The main organization supporting Senate Democrats, the Senate Majority PAC, provides financing to Duty and Country, states the New York Post.

Moreover, Dolan had earlier posted on X, "Schumer just got CAUGHT meddling in our primary because he wants the weakest opponent for Sherrod Brown."
