NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Fresh NYPD data released Monday, August 3 has placed Mayor Zohran Mamdani under renewed scrutiny after showing hate crimes continue to rise across New York City, with Jewish residents accounting for the overwhelming majority of victims.
The latest figures have intensified concerns among Jewish leaders, who argue the growing number of antisemitic attacks reflects a worsening climate of fear and accuse City Hall of failing to confront the problem with the urgency it demands.

Hate crimes at rise in NYC
Newly released NYPD data shows hate crimes in New York City reaching 360 so far this year, up from 329 during the same period last year, a 9.4% increase.
Anti-Jewish incidents continue to make up the largest share, with 205 cases recorded compared to 189 a year ago, reflecting an 8.5% rise.
As a result, nearly 57% of all hate crimes this year have targeted Jewish residents, despite representing a small portion of the city’s population.
The increase is particularly striking given that it runs counter to overall crime trends, with shootings, robberies and burglaries all declining across the city.
According to multiple media outlets, Jewish groups have reportedly said that the figures reflect ongoing trends, warning of disproportionate targeting.
Concern was heightened after a synagogue stabbing, with criticism raised over the city’s response being seen as lacking urgency.
Mamdani faces backlash from residents
The intensifying debate over antisemitism has further strained ties between Mayor Mamdani and parts of New York’s Jewish community.
A petition from families of September 11 victims recently called for him to be excluded from the upcoming Ground Zero anniversary ceremony, citing concerns over his past positions.
Although organisers reaffirmed the event’s non-political nature and his attendance remained unchanged, the episode exposed persistent mistrust.
