DENVER, COLORADO: Former Mesa County clerk Tina Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison on Thursday, October 3, for promoting the false conspiracy theory that former president Donald Trump lost the 2020 election due to ballot fraud.

The sentencing follows her conviction for multiple crimes related to a breach of her county's voting system, according to The Hill.

What are the charges against Tina Peters?

Tina Peters, who had requested probation, was taken into custody immediately after Judge Matthew Barrett denied her request to remain free.

In a scathing rebuke, Judge Barrett stated, "I'm convinced you’d do it all over again if you could. You're as defiant a defendant as this court has ever seen."

On August 12, Peters was convicted by a jury of seven criminal charges, including attempting to influence a public servant, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, violation of duty, and failure to comply with Colorado Secretary of State requirements.

One of the key accusations against Peters involved her using another person's security badge to grant unauthorized access to the county's election system.

The person who used the badge was linked to Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow and a prominent advocate of the false claim that Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 election was due to ballot fraud.

Peters also falsely accused Dominion Voting Systems, the company responsible for Mesa County's election infrastructure, of participating in a scheme to prevent Trump's reelection.

Prosecutors explain Tina Peters 'deceptive scheme'

During her trial, prosecutors depicted Tina Peters' actions as part of a "deceptive scheme" aimed at manipulating public servants, breaching security protocols, and exceeding authorized access to voting equipment.

Her efforts ultimately led to the distribution of confidential election information to unauthorized individuals.

Prosecutors also argued that Peters became "fixated" on voting issues after becoming involved with individuals questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

They suggested that the former Mesa County clerk sought fame and recognition through her actions, which have now resulted in a landmark case.

Commenting on the verdict, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold emphasized the significance of the case for election security.

"Tina Peters willfully compromised her own election equipment trying to prove Trump's Big Lie," said Griswold.

"She has been found guilty of 4 felonies and 3 misdemeanors by a jury of her peers and will now face the consequences of her actions," she continued.

"Today's verdict sends a clear message: we will not tolerate any effort to threaten the security of our gold standard elections. I am proud that justice for Colorado voters has been served today," Griswold continued.
