WASHINGTON, DC: After the GOP-controlled House passed a $1.2 trillion spending bill on Friday, March 22, former lawmaker George Santos declared he was rebranding and would no longer identify as a Republican. He declared he would run for the First Congressional District of New York as an independent candidate.

Santos stated during President Joe Biden's State of the Union address that he would run again following his expulsion from Congress in December 2023 for using donor cash to pay for explicit content and cosmetic botox procedures unlawfully.

George Santos announces he is quitting Republican party

George Santos posted on X, "After today’s embarrassing showing in the house I have reflected and decided that I can no longer be part of the Republican Party."

He added, "I will take my Ultra MAGA/Trump supporting values to the ballot in November as an Independent."

Notably, shortly after the Department of Justice filed charges against the former congressman, Santos launched his campaign for Congress.

The Department of Justice announced in October 2023, "Congressman George Santos Charged With Conspiracy, Wire Fraud, False Statements, Falsification of Records, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Credit Card Fraud."

In response to federal allegations alleging various broad-ranging fraud schemes, including the unlawful use of credit card details obtained from campaign supporters, Santos has entered a not guilty plea.

Notably, Santos must submit an independent nomination petition to the Suffolk County Board of Elections by May 28 with the signatures of 3,500 voters in New York's 1st District to run as an independent in the November election.

Internet trolls George Santos as he will run for Congress as an independent

Several people on the Internet shared their reactions after George Santos announced that he was rebranding and would no longer identify as a Republican and run as an independent for Congress.

A user wrote on X, "Considering the fact that he’s known as a notoriously infamous liar, he’s lying."

Another added, "Santos is under the impression that the Republican party even cares what he thinks. He just won't let go."

A user also wrote, "Nah, he goes whichever way the wind is blowing. It tells us more about him that he was a part of that party and co-signed everything they did in congress.

Another user mentioned, "Santos won't really be done until he is in prison. Hopefully he will be done very soon."

A user also stated, "Someone needs to tell him he was done months ago."

One remarked, "You can’t break up with them. They broke up with you first loser."
