House Dem Hakeem Jeffries meets Biden to discuss 'path forward' amid rising calls for POTUS to exit race
WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) met at the White House on Thursday, July 11, to discuss the growing concerns within the Democratic caucus regarding the president's 2024 campaign.
In a letter to House colleagues, Jeffries detailed the session as a candid exchange where he conveyed the increasing anxieties of many Democrats, especially those from closely contested districts.
President Joe Biden has faced calls from within the Democratic Party to step aside following his debate with Donald Trump
The call for President Joe Biden to step aside has intensified following his dismal debate performance against Donald Trump. His soft-spoken delivery, flubbed lines, and moments of losing his train of thought have fueled discussions among Democrats on Capitol Hill about whether he should remain the party's nominee.
During the 90-minute televised debate, Trump seized the opportunity to ridicule Biden's occasionally unclear statements multiple times. At one instance, the incumbent paused before stating, "I beat Medicare."
Amid the mounting pressure to exit from the 2024 race, the president met virtually with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Friday.
During the meeting, caucus member Rep Mike Levin (D-CA) reportedly called on Biden to drop out of the race. He later issued a statement to clarify, "I have deep respect for President Biden's five-plus decades of public service and incredible appreciation for the work we've done together these last three and a half years. But I believe the time has come for President Biden to pass the torch."
Hakeem Jeffries' discourse with President Joe Biden was candid and comprehensive
Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders have been actively listening to their colleagues' apprehensions. Several Democratic lawmakers doubt Joe Biden's ability to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election, fearing that his continued candidacy could jeopardize their control of both the House and Senate.
In his letter following the White House meeting, the New York lawmaker wrote, "Over the past several days, House Democrats have engaged in a thoughtful and extensive discussion about the future of our country, during a time when freedom, democracy, and the economic well-being of everyday Americans are on the line," as per CBS News.
He added, "Our discourse has been candid, clear-eyed, and comprehensive. On behalf of the House Democratic caucus, I requested and was graciously granted a private meeting with President Joe Biden. That meeting occurred yesterday evening."
Hakeem Jeffries delivered 'conclusions about the path forward' to President Joe Biden
In their conversation, Hakeem Jeffries expressed he "directly expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives, and conclusions about the path forward that the caucus has shared in our recent time together."
The meeting followed Biden's press conference at the NATO summit's conclusion, where he reaffirmed his commitment to the race, insisting he is the best candidate to govern and to win.
"I believe I'm the best qualified to govern. And I think I'm the best qualified to win. But there are other people who could beat Trump, too. But it's awful hard to start from scratch," declared the incumbent.
Adding to the day's political activity, Biden's top aides met with Senate Democrats, some of whom have also voiced their concerns about his electoral prospects.
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) echoed these sentiments, stating, "I am deeply concerned about Joe Biden winning this November because it is an existential threat to the country if Donald Trump wins. So I think that we have to reach a conclusion as soon as possible."
