WASHINGTON, DC: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY, acknowledged that President Joe Biden gave an "underwhelming performance" during the first presidential debate though most Democrats in leadership remained silent on the subject.

Concerns about Biden's capacity to continue as the Democratic nominee surfaced shortly after the president engaged in a debate with former President Donald Trump on Thursday, June 27.

Biden's hoarse voice and falling off topic were noted by viewers during the debate evening.

Hakeem Jeffries calls the CNN debate night a 'setback' for Joe Biden

Hakeem Jeffries referred to the evening as a "setback," and Democrats, including the president himself, admitted that he was not at the top of his game.

"I’ve been very clear that it was an underwhelming performance on Thursday during the debate, as President Biden and his campaign have acknowledged," Jeffries told MSNBC on Sunday, June 30.

Jeffries opined that Democrats can use the debate as a "comeback moment" to support his party's efforts to retake the House in November.

"I believe a setback is nothing more than a setup for a comeback. And the reality is, Joe Biden has confronted and had to come back from tragedy, from trials, from tribulations throughout his entire life," the Democrat said Sunday.

"It's going to require all of us to lean in, articulate a forward-looking message as to why the Democratic platform is best equipped to deal with the challenges facing the American people," he added, per Fox News.

Internet says it's tough for Joe Biden to make a strong comeback after 27 June debate

Netizens said that the current president can't make a strong revival following his disastrous debate performance last Thursday.

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, "Underwhelming is a massive understatement. Time to hang up those aviators, the future doesn’t look real bright with/without them."

Another tweeted, "The dems need a new candidate. The sooner they realize this the better off they will be. After that debate performance many voters don’t think Biden can run the country now never mind in 2 years from now."

"That 'setback' is costing the American people a leader. If he can't run, who's governing NOW?" asked one user.

"No coming back [going] to happen with DEMENTIA," remarked one.

Another penned, "You cannot bring back the Dead Dead Man Walking."
