WASHINGTON, DC: The House of Representatives adopted a resolution to honor the "life and legacy" of late conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Friday, just over a week after he was shot and killed during a speaking event at Utah Valley University.

The measure passed with bipartisan support in a 310-58 vote, with Democrats and Republicans both moving quickly to condemn political violence following Kirk’s assassination.

Democrats divided as House resolution honoring Charlie Kirk advances

The vote revealed sharp divisions among Democrats. A total of 95 supported the resolution, 58 voted against it, 22 did not vote, and 38 voted “present.”

The top three House Democrats, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, and Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California, voted in favor of the resolution.

House Democratic leadership did not issue a formal directive but communicated that they would back the measure, according to two sources familiar with discussions, Fox News reported.

The measure, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson, described the Turning Point USA founder as “one of the most prominent voices in America, engaging in respectful, civil discourse across college campuses, media platforms and national forums, always seeking to elevate truth, foster understanding and strengthen the Republic.”

It further stated that Kirk’s “commitment to civil discussion and debate stood as a model for young Americans across the political spectrum, and he worked tirelessly to promote unity without compromising on conviction.”

Resolution warns of threat from political extremism

The five-page resolution, introduced by Johnson, and co-sponsored by 165 House Republicans but no Democrats, praised Kirk as a “courageous American patriot” who sought to “elevate truth, foster understanding, and strengthen the Republic”.

The resolution called Kirk’s killing “a sobering reminder of the growing threat posed by political extremism and hatred in our society” and urged all Americans “regardless of race, party affiliation, or creed—to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans.”

It also invoked Kirk’s Christian faith, affirming that the House “honors the life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and biblical truth inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.”

Democrats criticized over refusing to vote for Charlie Kirk's life and legacy

Democrats faced backlash from conservatives for skipping or voting against the resolution.

"History won’t forget. Neither should we," Rep Nancy Mace wrote on X, along with the list of Democrats who voted against.

Congressman Randy Fine who represents Florida's 6th congressional district wrote, "58 Democrats just voted against condemning the assassination of Charlie Kirk on the House Floor. This tells us all we need to know."

"Some 58 Democrats voted against the resolution for Charlie Kirk (another 22 only voted present). Eighty members could not get themselves to join in a shared moment of mourning. Rage before regret. If Antigone were alive, she would be denounced and doxxed," wrote Jonathan Turley.

Donald Trump Jr wrote, "Disgusting." Texas Rep Troy E Nehls said it was "Shameful."

Rep Andy Ogles wrote, "118 Democrats voted no or refused to vote on honoring Charlie Kirk on the House Floor. Refusing to disavow left-wing political violence is not unity; it's siding with evil. We are Charlie Kirk."

Many other Republicans also took aim at Democrats for failing to be a party to unity.
