DES MOINES, IOWA: Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley garnered immense social media attention as she ripped into President Joe Biden for “lecturing” her about the cause of the Civil War during a speech in her home state.

The 81-year-old POTUS traveled to Charleston on Monday, January 8 to speak at the historic Black Mother Emanuel AME Church which was the site of the heinous racially motivated 2015 mass shooting.

During his address, Biden took shots at both Haley and former President Donald Trump over their recent comments on the Civil War.

"So let me be clear for those who don't seem to know: Slavery was the cause of the Civil War," he said, adding, "There was no negotiation about that."

Biden’s quip came after Haley sparked a backlash for not mentioning slavery when a New Hampshire town hall attendee asked her what caused the Civil War.

"I mean I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms and what people could and couldn't do," she said during the event.

She then asked the man for his opinion on what started the Civil War, and who commented that he found it 'astonishing' that she wouldn't mention the word 'slavery.' “What do you want me to say about slavery?” Haley further responded.

What did Nikki Haley say about President Biden?

On Monday, the former UN ambassador was attending a Fox News town hall with Iowa voters, when moderators Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier asked her to respond to Biden's remarks at the church.

Haley then responded by stating that “for Biden to show up there and give a political speech is offensive in itself.”

“I don’t need someone who palled around with segregationists in the 70s and has said racist comments through his career lecturing me or anyone in South Carolina about what it means to have racism, slavery, or anything related to the Civil War,” she added.

Haley was drawing attention to remarks made by Biden during the 2020 campaign that caused him to face criticism from Democratic competitors, including Senator Cory Booker, who is Black.

In June 2019, Biden reflected on his time in the Senate working with segregationist Senators James Eastland of Mississippi and Harman Talmadge of Georgia, referring to them as "one of the meanest guys I ever knew."

“I was in a caucus with James O Eastland. He never called me 'boy', he always called me 'son'", Biden told donors, stating, “Well guess what? At least there was some civility. We got things done. We got it finished.

“But today, you look at the other side and you're the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy, we don't talk to each other anymore,” he added, according to Daily Mail.

Booker suggested that Biden apologize, but the current president declined. “Apologize for what? Cory should apologize. He knows better. There's not a racist bone in my body. I've been involved in civil rights my whole career,” he told CNN.

Internet reacts to Nikki Haley’s remarks

Haley has apparently divided the internet with her remarks over Biden’s speech. “Nikki, Trump should be your target,” one user said.

“She’s absolutely correct, here. But it’s unsurprising that Biden always tries to talk down to people because he has to cover up a history of racist statements,” the second user supported.

“Haley should run with Biden as his VP. They are one and the same,” the third user mocked while the fourth one said, “Two WWE actors pretending to fight while being paid by the same boss”.

“Why does it matter what Biden says? He has ZERO clue what century he’s living in more or less what a presidential candidate is,” the fifth user stated, supporting Haley.

“It is not lecturing when they are facts learned by everyone across the world except in the few states of the US which actually <checks notes> owned human beings!” another user wrote.
