DES MOINES, IOWA: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis earned netizen’s support as he launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump for claiming that the Civil War could have been avoided through mediation.

The 77-year-old GOP frontrunner claimed during an Iowa rally that he thinks “many mistakes” were made during the Civil War and suggested the awful amount of carnage could have been prevented through negotiations.

“See there was something I think could’ve been negotiated, to be honest with you. I think you could’ve negotiated that. All the people died, so many people died,” he said.

Trump described the conflict as "so horrible but so fascinating," but he did not elaborate on how he would have stopped it. “It was, I don’t know, it was just different,” he said, adding, “I just find it – I’m so attracted to seeing it.” Trump declared, "There's nothing nice about it.”

He also suggested that Lincoln would not have the same historical cachet “if he negotiated it.”

“He would have been president, but he would have been president, and he wouldn’t have been the Abraham Lincoln. Would’ve been different, but that would’ve been OK,” the former president said.

What did DeSantis say about Trump’s remarks?

The Florida Governor was in Iowa on Monday when ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott asked him about Trump’s remarks about the Civil War, according to NY Post.

“I don’t even know what he’s talking about,” DeSantis replied, adding, “Lincoln did what he had to do. He ended up ushering in the abolition of slavery and he saved the Union. Relitigating that doesn’t make much sense to me.”

In another video, posted by DeSantis' Never Back Down super PAC, the GOP frontrunner was seen slamming Trump, saying his remarks have left people ‘head scratching’.

“He's lost the zip on his fastball, some of the things he was talking about in terms of magnets underwater, saying that somehow the Perry shooting people just needed to get over it,” DeSantis said in the video.

“We're really heads scratching to hear that, you know, he even suggested that that the Civil War, you know, could have, he could have potentially negotiated that somehow you, he couldn't even negotiate funding for a border wall when he had a Republican Congress,” he added.

Internet reacts to DeSantis’ remarks

After DeSantis’ remarks surfaced on social media, many users supported him with one user saying, “Trump is so ignorant. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️”.

“This is why Trump runs away from debates...he is only afraid of DeSantis,” the second user stated while the third one said, “I hate Desantis but he’s 100% correct.”

“Trump couldn't even negotiate the completion of his wall when his side controlled congress ffs,” the fourth user said supporting DeSantis.

“Anyone who says the civil war could’ve been peacefully negotiated is literally too stupid to insult. Just mute those people and do not engage,” one more stated.
