MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Republican grandees are preparing "contingencies" in case former President Donald Trump is incarcerated following his July 11 sentencing, according to insiders and authorities as reported by the New York Post.

On May 30, a New York jury found the presumptive GOP nominee guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the hush money case. Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the criminal trial, could sentence the ex-POTUS to probation or up to four years in state prison, among other possibilities.

GOP has contingency plans in place so that Donald Trump can accept his nomination regardless of the situation

A Trump fund-raiser, who said party officials declined at the time to get into details, said, "I was at a dinner where that question was asked by a donor, and RNC staff said that there were contingency plans in place. My understanding is Trump could [accept the nomination] from wherever. Does he physically need to be there? I don’t think so."

The Republican convention, where Trump will be officially announced as the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, is scheduled to be held in Milwaukee on July 15, just days after the former president's sentencing.

"My suspicion of what you do if the guy is actually in jail — which who knows, right? I think you probably have him do some kind of video in advance just in case," told a recently departed Republican National Committee staffer to the New York Post.

A New York-based Republican delegate mentioned that there had been some discussion about maybe advancing the convention. The proposal is addressed as an emergency measure in the convention rules, which were approved in November 2023 - just as Trump's trial was about to begin.

Several sources have stated that Trump does not need to be physically present at the convention to accept the nomination.

RNC co-chair Lara Trump said on CNN last week, "We have to be ready for anything. Whether it's from Trump Tower in Manhattan, whether it’s from Mar-a-Lago, whether it’s from our convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we will nominate Donald Trump as our Republican nominee and that’s what ultimately matters."

Despite speculation that the MAGA leader would serve time in prison given his elderly age and spotless record, legal officials close to the president claim that the possibility is not as distant as many believe.

In January 2023, Allen Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, entered a guilty plea to many counts of fraud and tax offenses, and Merchan sentenced him to five months in Rikers Island. Weisselberg, 76, had no former criminal record.

Internet trolls Donald Trump as GOP plans convention 'contingencies'

A netizen wrote, "Trump is doomed since he declared his candidacy," and another joked, "Live from Rikers Island it’s the Republican national convention. With our sponsor American Express credit cards. Donald Trump won’t leave jail without it."

"We don’t have political differences in this country, we have psychiatric differences. MAGAs simply can’t discern consensual reality, they live in an insane world of conspiracy theories and magical thinking," said a person, while someone else added, "Maga tears will flow like a river this November."

An individual stated, "Don't forget to send Trump your hard-earned dollars, MAGA cult members," whereas one more mentioned, "His nomination is stupid. Should he win, the USA will have more military recruitment problems."

Another person suggested, "Should he be jailed, hold the convention right there. In the prison. America has a huge prison industry. Most know someone that has been incarcerated or been incarcerated themselves. Speak to the people from a setting from which they are familiar."
