DES MOINES, IOWA: Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley found herself in hot water as she ridiculed the notion that former presidents enjoy total immunity from prosecution for offenses they were not impeached and removed from office over.

During the CNN GOP presidential debate with Ron DeSantis, the 51-year-old GOP front-runner was asked by moderator Jake Tapper if she agreed with Donald Trump that a president should have complete immunity.

Tapper asked about the jaw-dropping moment during Tuesday's DC court appearance in which Trump's lawyer told judges that the president would not face legal action unless he was impeached and proven guilty even if he was accused of directing SEAL Team Six to kill a political opponent.

“No, that's ridiculous. That's completely ridiculous,” the former UN ambassador replied, adding, “I mean, we need to use some common sense here. You can't go and kill a political rival and claim, you know, immunity from a president.”

Haley added, "I think we have to start doing things that are right," despite having stated along the campaign trail that Trump was the right president for the right moment, as per Daily Mail.

“We need to look at what President Trump has done. You look at the last few years and our country is completely divided. It's divided over extremes, it's divided over hatred, it's divided over the fact that people think if someone doesn't agree with you, they're bad,” Haley further added.

“Now we have leaders in our country that decide who is good and who is bad, who is right, who is wrong. That's not what a leader does," she continued.

The former South Carolina governor also argued that true leaders bring out the best in people “and get them to see the way forward.”

“That's what we need in our country. We don't need this chaos anymore. We need someone who is going to be a new generational leader,” she explained.

What did Ron DeSantis say about presidents having full immunity?

Ron DeSantis told Tapper that "obviously that attorney gave the case away, on that, on that explanation" in response to a question concerning the audacious claim made by Trump's lawyer.

The governor of Florida anticipated that the matter would go to trial "before a stacked, left-wing DC jury comprised entirely of Democrats."

Tossing away the validity of the charges, DeSantis predicted, “I don't think he gets through that.” He also asked, “And so what are we going to do, as Republicans, in terms of who we nominate?”

“If Trump is the nominee, it's going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials - the Democrats and the media would love to run with that,” he said.

Internet reacts to Nikki Haley’s remarks

Nikki Haley’s remarks have sparked outrage on social media, with one user saying, “Nikki the opportunist.”

“She has NO chance! Another Hillary!” the second user trolled, while the third one said, “She should stick to her debits & credits.”

“Nikki is toast. The most anti-Trump GOP candidate for POTUS just expressly dismissed her (now the most anti-Trump candidate) as not viable and well beyond her depth. Chris, like Nikki, was a tool of the Democrats and RINOs, yet still couldn’t lower himself to endorsing her,” the fourth user fumed.

“Her locked jaw pattern of speech is insufferable!” the fifth user trolled.

“Gov. DeSantis won big the debate. Nikki Haley is so weak & keep accusing Gov. DeSantis when she ran out of words &proof her case,” one more said.
