WASHINGTON: After declaring his desire to return to Congress, Representative George Santos attended a federal court hearing on Long Island wearing expensive Salvatore Ferragamo sneakers.

The judge was informed by his counsel that the plea negotiations in his fraud case had been "productive."

At the hearing for his embezzlement and identity fraud case in Central Islip federal court, the New York Republican was dressed in his customary suit and sweater outfit.

He told reporters he was wearing the $1,000 black sneakers because "I hurt my foot."

George Santos wants to go back to Congress

However, before the court date, Santos, 35, told Frank Morano of WABC radio, "I’m not done with public service. I want to go back to Congress."

“I’m not saying today. I’m not saying tomorrow. I have a lot of things I need to take care of first. I think we all know, but I do have hopes of trying to regain the trust of the American people and going there because I will continue to expose and root out the rot in our federal government,” Santos said on the radio show 'The Other Side of Midnight'.

The federal government is pressing for the trial date to be moved forward to September 9, 2024, but Santos' attorney, Joseph Murray, told Judge Joanna Seybert in court that the defense team has been having difficulty sorting through the more than 1.3 million pages of evidence that the prosecutors have sent over.

“We’ve been struggling to go through all that material. There are still a million more documents that we have to go through.

We’re having productive conversations. I think this could be fruitful if we focus on that," Murray said.
