AUSTIN, TEXAS: Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' notorious Infowars media platform would be shut down and liquidated to help pay off the $1.5 billion lawsuit he owes to the families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

In an emergency filing on Sunday, June 23, bankruptcy court trustee Christopher Murray signaled that he planned "to wind down" the far right outlet through which Jones spread dangerous misinformation and "liquidate" its parent company, Free Speech Systems, the CNN reported.

Earlier this month, a judge ordered to liquidate Jones' personal assets to pay the $1.5 million he owes to the families affected by his repeated labeling of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting as a hoax. However, due to the lengthy process, Infowars' parent company was not included in the liquidation.

Trustee to shut down Free Speech Systems operations

Following the dismissal of the bankruptcy case against Free Speech Systems, the Sandy Hook families could pursue Jones' assets, including Infowars, in state court.

Though the court-appointed trustee planned to wind down the outlet since he was put in charge of Jones' company, it was "derailed" after a parent of the Sandy Hook victim filed a motion in a Texas District Court demanding the custody of all assets of Free Speech Systems' including Infowars.

Jones' trustee urged the bankruptcy judge for an emergency stay in the motion in order to "orderly winddown and sale process" of Infowars.

In response to the conspiracy theorist's trustee's move to shut down, the outlet Christopher Mattei, the lawyer for victims' families from Connecticut, said, "This is precisely the unfortunate situation that the Connecticut families hoped to avoid when we argued that the Free Speech Systems/InfoWars case should have remained with the bankruptcy court rather than being dismissed."

"The Connecticut families are disappointed by this attempt to undercut the orderly and long overdue wind down of Alex Jones's InfoWars platform," the attorney added.

Despite celebrating the earlier ruling not to liquidate Infowars, Jones admitted that the outlet would continue only for a few months.

Internet welcomes trustee's move to shut down Alex Jones' Infowars

Netizens hailed the bankruptcy trustee's plan to shut down Alex Jones' conspiracy-spreading platform Inforwars, deeming it a win for democracy.

"Democracy in action," a social media user wrote. Another remarked, "Well deserved. Freedom of Speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences."

A third user added, "This is both deserved, but not enough. He spent years hurting people and ruining lives, and he's on the record of saying he doesn't believe any of his own bulls**t (it's just business for him). A truly sick, evil man who can never be held accountable enough."

A fourth response read, "Such good news! There is justice at least in some cases. The Sandy Hook parents & families will never get closure for the loss of those precious babies & family members but at least one evil voice that taunted them will go will suffer for what he did to them."

"It's about time. Shutting down platforms that spread harmful conspiracy theories is a step towards ensuring a more informed and rational public discourse," another person said.

Someone else wrote, "Good riddance InfoWars & that loser site. Hope the families affected get every penny from Jones."

An individual said, "Good. He's a hateful, spineless grifter. Maga is his audience, maga is who he knows he can brainwash."

"Silenced from spreading misinformation, we need more of this," another user chimed in.
