Lara Trump announces candidacy for co-chair of RNC
Politico reported that Lara Trump boasted about her well-known father-in-law's support in a letter to the 168 RNC members. She wrote, "Proud to have the endorsement of my father-in-law and 45th president, Donald J Trump, for this position and understand the fundamental importance of this role."
She added, "In the coming days, I look forward to connecting with you, the members of the RNC, and hopefully earning your vote."
Trump's entry into the race follows the announcement on Monday by RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Co-Chair Drew McKissick that they would both be leaving their leadership positions on March 8.
Following three consecutive election cycles of Republican underperformance, Donald Trump, the GOP's overwhelming favorite for the 2024 presidential nomination, had hinted earlier in February that a leadership change at the RNC was long overdue.
In lieu of McDaniel, the former president is endorsing Michael Whatley, the chairman of the North Carolina GOP. Whatley was spotted onstage with Trump throughout the weekend at the former president's victory celebration for the South Carolina primary. On Monday, the Republican from North Carolina began his campaign for the role of RNC head.
