Trump's entry into the race follows the announcement on Monday by RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Co-Chair Drew McKissick that they would both be leaving their leadership positions on March 8.

Following three consecutive election cycles of Republican underperformance, Donald Trump, the GOP's overwhelming favorite for the 2024 presidential nomination, had hinted earlier in February that a leadership change at the RNC was long overdue.

Whatley was spotted onstage with Trump throughout the weekend at the former president's victory celebration for the South Carolina primary. On Monday, the Republican from North Carolina began his campaign for the role of RNC head.
