Internet rallies behind Chris Evans as he says Marvel deserves more credit for making superhero films
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Chris Evans, best known for his portrayal of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently expressed his admiration for comic book movies and the challenges they entail.
During his speech at Emerald City Con 2024, Evans emphasized the difficulty of making blockbuster superhero films and asked viewers to give them more credit.
Chris Evans praises Marvel for elevating Superhero genre: 'They are not easy to make'
Evans noted that making comic book movies is difficult and that most of the time, they don't get the credit they deserve. Making these kinds of movies is difficult, he said, even with their enormous scope and widespread appeal.
“Comic book movies in general, for whatever reason, don’t always get the credit I think they deserve,” Evans told the audience.
“They are these big, giant movies. There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones. I’m not throwing shade! I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough. More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier. I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalogue but some of them are phenomenal. Like independently, objectively great movies, and I think they deserve a little more credit.”
Evans picked 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' as his favorite Marvel film. The actor made his second solo appearance in the film.
“It’s my personal favorite Marvel movie that I was a part of. It’s not just for the movie itself but the experience,” he said.
“The first film, I was so nervous. You know what you’re stepping into and as a result, you’re playing defense and you’re playing not to lose. When ‘Winter Solider’ came around, we were playing to win. And it’s the first movie with the Russo Brothers. We were taking more risks, and the character felt more fleshed out. It was one of the more satisfying experiences I’ve had in my Marvel run.”
At the C2E2 fan convention in Chicago last year, Evans said a potential Captain America return "doesn't quite feel right" at the moment. Despite this, Evans admitted that he would enjoy telling more Captain America stories.
“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply,” Evans said when asked about returning as Captain America. “He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories to tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it … it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way. I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and, in a way, it really landed so well.”
Evans added, “As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people, it doesn’t quite feel right right now.”
Fans laud Marvel's cinematic universe accomplishments
Chris Evans' recent remarks about Marvel's impact on superhero movies have sparked a wave of support from fans, who are rallying behind the studio's monumental achievements in the genre.
One fan praised Marvel's ambitious storytelling applauding "I thought the movies from Iron Man thru Endgame were pretty epic. Some were better than others but how they tied them all together was pretty cool to experience. The time travel thing at the end kind of sucked but overall it was a pretty spectacular achievement."
Another fan reminisced about the unparalleled enjoyment they experienced while watching the films saying, "I know everyone loves hating on Marvel, but Goddamn. I can’t remember having more fun at the movies when they were big. Maybe those days are gone, but do we have to pretend we didn’t enjoy the absolute hell out of those movies for over ten years??"
Highlighting Marvel's unparalleled success, another fan underscored the studio's ability to craft an expansive and cohesive narrative spanning 23 movies over ten years saying, "Word. Most franchises can’t pull off a single sequel. They made a whole damn universe and singular story (Infinity Saga) that spanned TWENTY THREE MOVIES over ten years. Give credit where credit is due"
Another user wrote, "The Captain America arc was my favourite. If I’m sitting around and need something to watch as background to whatever I’m doing, I will throw on TFA, WS or CW. Inevitably I’ll stop what I’m doing and just watch. I’ve probably watched TFA 200 times"
